Wi-Fi 7 Just Hit Half the Enterprise Market. Should It Be in Your Next Network Refresh Proposal?
Wi-Fi 7 now accounts for nearly half of enterprise wireless AP revenue, turning it into a live procurement question. Here's a practical framework for UK SMEs deciding whether to upgrade now or wait.
A hardware supplier rang one of our clients last month with a familiar pitch: their three-year-old access points were "end of sale" and it was time to talk about a refresh. Fair enough. But the quote that landed a week later was entirely Wi-Fi 7 kit, priced accordingly, with no explanation of why a 30-person accountancy practice in West Bridgford needed the fastest wireless standard on the market.
That sales call is happening across the country right now, because the numbers have shifted. Wi-Fi 7 recently crossed a threshold that changes the conversation: it now accounts for close to half of all enterprise wireless access point revenue. Two years ago it was a curiosity you'd read about in trade press. Today it's what vendors lead with, and increasingly it's the default option on any refresh quote you receive.
So the question is no longer "when will Wi-Fi 7 arrive?" It's here. The real question is whether it belongs in your next network proposal, or whether you're about to pay a premium for headroom you'll never use. Here's how we think about it.
What Wi-Fi 7 actually gives you
Strip away the marketing and there are three changes worth knowing about.
The first is the 6 GHz band and much wider channels. Wi-Fi 7 can use 320 MHz channels, double the width of Wi-Fi 6, which means far more raw throughput when conditions allow. On paper you're looking at speeds that comfortably exceed what most SME internet connections can deliver.
The second, and arguably more useful, is Multi-Link Operation. In plain terms, a device can talk to an access point across two frequency bands at once. That improves reliability and cuts latency, because if one band is congested, traffic shifts to the other without dropping the connection. For anything real-time, video calls, voice, remote desktop sessions, that consistency matters more than peak speed.
The third is better handling of dense environments. More devices, more simultaneous connections, less contention. If you've ever sat in a busy meeting room where nobody's screen share works properly, this is aimed squarely at that problem.
Notice what's missing from that list: a reason it applies to everyone. All three benefits depend on how your business actually uses the network.
The upgrade-now signals
Some situations genuinely justify Wi-Fi 7 today. If several of these describe you, put it in the proposal.
You're running or planning AI and data-heavy workloads locally. Teams moving large datasets, running local model inference, or shifting big files between machines and storage will feel the difference. The wider channels and MLO aren't theoretical here, they translate into shorter wait times and fewer stalls. A design studio pushing 4K video or a firm running analytics on-premises has a real case.
Your office density is high and getting higher. Hybrid working has an odd effect on networks. Fewer people come in on average, but Tuesdays and Wednesdays are packed. If your busiest days now cram 60 people and their laptops, phones and headsets into a space built for 40, the connection-handling improvements earn their keep. Density is one of the clearest reasons to move up a standard.
You're doing a full cabling and switch refresh anyway. Wi-Fi 7 access points can demand more power and faster switch ports to hit their potential. If you're already replacing switches and pulling new cable, adding Wi-Fi 7 costs relatively little on the margin. Retrofitting it later, once the walls are closed up and the switches are bought, costs a great deal more. This is the strongest financial argument: not the AP price itself, but the surrounding work you only want to do once.
You expect to keep this kit for five to seven years. Enterprise wireless has a long life. If you buy today and plan to run it until 2031, buying the current standard means you're not the business staring down a premature refresh in three years because everyone's devices have moved on.
The wait-and-see signals
Just as often, the honest answer is: not yet.
Your internet connection is the bottleneck, not your wireless. If you're on a 200 Mbps leased line or a business FTTP package, no wireless standard will make browsing or cloud apps faster. The Wi-Fi was never the limiting factor. Spend the money on the connection, or on nothing at all.
Your device fleet is mostly older. Wi-Fi 7's headline benefits need Wi-Fi 7 clients. If your laptops and phones are two or three years old, they'll connect at Wi-Fi 6 or 6E speeds regardless of how capable the access point is. You'd be buying a sports car for a fleet of learner drivers. As staff refresh their hardware over the next few years, the balance shifts, but there's no rush to be first.
Your current network isn't struggling. This sounds obvious, and yet refreshes are frequently driven by a vendor's end-of-sale calendar rather than any actual problem. If your Wi-Fi 6 kit is three years old, well-covered and nobody's complaining, "end of sale" is not the same as "end of support". You often have years of runway left. Replacing working equipment to chase a standard you don't need is money set on fire.
You're a smaller or single-site operation with modest usage. A ten-person office doing email, Teams calls and cloud accounting simply won't stress modern wireless. Wi-Fi 6, which is now mature and cheaper, will serve you well for years.
A quick way to decide
When a Wi-Fi 7 quote lands on your desk, run it through four questions:
- Is the wireless genuinely the constraint today? Check the internet line and the switches first. If they're the real limit, fix those.
- Will your devices actually use it within 18 months? Line up the refresh against your laptop and phone replacement cycle.
- Are you already opening up the cabling and switching? If yes, the incremental cost of Wi-Fi 7 is small and worth taking. If no, weigh the premium carefully.
- What's the total cost over the life of the kit, not just the sticker price? Factor in switch upgrades, power requirements and how long you'll keep it. Cheaper now can mean an earlier, more expensive refresh.
If you answer "yes" to two or three of the first three, and the total cost stacks up, Wi-Fi 7 belongs in the proposal. If you're answering "no" or "not yet", a well-specified Wi-Fi 6 or 6E design will serve you better and cost less.
The point of the exercise
Wi-Fi 7 reaching half the enterprise market means it's now the standard your suppliers will push by default. That's exactly why you need your own criteria. The technology is genuinely good, and for the right business it's a sensible buy today. But "the market is moving" is a reason for vendors to sell it, not a reason for you to buy it.
A network refresh should be driven by what your business does, how your people work and what you'll need for the next few years, not by a hardware maker's release schedule. Get that framing right, and the decision on Wi-Fi 7 tends to make itself.
